Each person, when purchasing the necessary product in a pharmacy, initially call attention to its manufacturer. And if the enterprise has been operating for a long time and has proved its worth, its product is favoured unequivocally.
FSUE Moscow Endocrine Plant is one of the enterprises to which you can give charge over the public health. Founded in 1943, in hard times of the Great Patriotic War, nowadays it is certainly included in the list of the leaders of Russian pharmaceuticals industry. What were the stages of this great path?
Adviser of the Director of the enterprise, Lyudmila Vladimirovna Shershakova, began her story about the plant with the historical background.
- Our plant was created under the slogan of war years “All is for the front, all is for the Victory!” There were not time for ramping-up, and the enterprise began to provide the front and the real area with necessary medicinal products. The production of active pharmaceutical ingridients and finished dosage forms continued in post-war years as well.
In Soviet-era of planned economy, the enterprise fulfilled state orders for finished products production in full; and its intensive development followed a parallel path. In that way, in late 60s, the plant for the first time began to produce biostimulators in dosage forms prepared from antlers of maral, and from that moment, silhouette of a noble stag became the plant emblem.
- Lyudmila Vladimirovna, I remember how popular these biostimulators were. But, as far as I know, the plant did not prioritize them, did it?
- Sure. Product range of our enterprise has never been monotonous, as it was and is an important component of medicine provision of the country, the enterprise processed earlier tons of raw materials of animal origin for the production of various endocrine preparations. Moscow Endocrine Plant products have been in high demand at all times, and their hight quality has won merited authority among the medical community and citizens of our country.
- Probably, it was the thing that helped the plant to endure hard times of the transition period honourably, wasn’t it?
- After Soviet breakup, domestic pharmaceuticals industry, as well as the other economy sectors underwent substantial transformations. Interindustry relationships, developed over the course of decades, were disturbed; problems in consumables and raw materials supply led to closing the facilities for processing substances of chemical and animal origin. The production was getting insufficiently profitable, the proceeds were not enough for modernisation of production lines, and youth had no interest in working at the plant. Nevertheless, strong authority and commitment to innovating gained for ages come to the help of the enterprise.
Russia had no own production of finished dosage forms of central action analgesics, as in soviet times, the production located by cooperation in union republics: substances - in Chimkent (Kazakhstan), and finished pharmaceutical products - in Kharkiv (Ukraine).
The country's leadership took a decision to put the management of manufacturing of this kind of products under care of a pharmaceutical enterprise, and Moscow Endocrine Plant became such an enterprise.
It's worth to remark that in a period of the following economic crisis in 2014, the enterprise along with being far from making its employees redundant, increased its staff size by more than 15% through the creation of own divisions of science and innovative development, adoption of pharmaceutical developments and new dosage forms.
- Judging by the name, the plant refers to the public sector of the economy. Can it be incorporated?
- Our enterprise is under supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, and due to the specificity of the products i produces, it’s not subject to denationalisation. For this reason, Moscow Endocrine Plant is at present actually the only state manufacturer of pharmaceutical products in the country. It has firm position on the domestic pharmaceutical market, and the enterprise delivers its products to all Russian regions.
